Glass Fusing & Metal Jewelry Materials Technician

This unique position allows students to explore hands-on processes in glass fusing and jewelry-making while working in a supportive, creative environment. Students gain independence in managing their own projects while directly contributing to the preservation and usability of the Art Department’s materials and equipment.

Type of work schedule	Part-time; hours are flexible and will be scheduled around student availability and agreed upon with the supervisor.
Estimated numbers of hours per week	5-10 hours
Experiential Learning:	– Gain experience in restoring and preserving craft materials and processes. – Develop research and archival documentation skills. – Build knowledge of material testing and equipment maintenance. – Learn methods for assessing usability of aged or archived studio supplies.
Professional Development:	Students will gain transferable skills in research, cataloging, and materials management. They will also practice workplace communication, safety procedures, and decision-making in a studio environment
Summary of Job Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions:	– Sort through materials in storage, identifying and labeling glass, metals, tools, and equipment. – Create a digital or written catalog of materials, including condition notes. – Discard or recycle unusable materials under faculty guidance. – Clean, repair, and prepare tools, molds, and equipment for reuse. – Safely handle older materials, ensuring compliance with safety protocols. – Restore stored glass and metal supplies to usable condition where possible. – Conduct small-scale tests on stored glass and jewelry materials to determine usability. – Record test outcomes with notes, photos, and organized data. – Develop recommendations for future use of restored materials. – Research best practices for restoring and reusing older studio materials. – Compile resources on glass fusing and jewelry-making processes relevant to storage recovery.
Minimum Qualifications:	– Must be eligible for Federal Work Study – Ability to work independently and follow safety protocols – Strong attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications:	– Prior experience with art materials, craft processes, or studio work – Basic computer/documentation skills
Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:	– Interest in art, jewelry-making, or glass fusing – Organizational skills and curiosity for research and process improvement
